Thomas Thrash Jr., was born in Houston Texas. He had been racing in SCCA competition for 12 years, winning the E Production National Championship in 2007. He had also twice qualified on pole for the Runoffs.
A very popular driver, he was in a qualifying race for the SCCA-sanctioned Chicago Region June Sprints event at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, when he lost control of his E Production class Mazda RX-7 entering turn eight. He entered the gravel trap, ending up against the tyre wall. No other cars were involved and it is speculated that a catastrophic medical problem might well have contributed to the accident.
