Gwyn Edward Staley was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina, United States. Gwyn and his brother Enoch originally owned the former North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina.

Staley only won twice in 65 starts in “hard tops”, once in Syracuse, NY, the other win coming at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, both in 1957. Overall he had 16 top tens and two poles in that division. In convertibles he fared a little better taking three wins and 36 top tens out of 50 races.

He was killed driving a Chevrolet in a NASCAR convertible stock car race at the Richmond International Raceway, Virginia. At the time of his death he was the ranked third in the NASCAR covertible stock car division.

His youngest son, Gwyn Staley Junior, was just 13 days old.
