The San Marino Grand Prix in 2005 saw an epic battle in the closing laps between Alonso and Schumacher with the Spaniard crossing the line 0.21 seconds ahead of Schumacher!
The XXV Gran Premio Foster's di San Marino or the San Marino Grand Prix was run on the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, Italy. In the 62-lap race Räikkönen led away from pole, pulling out a gap of several seconds, before he retired on lap nine with driveshaft problems. Alonso took over the lead and was unchallenged until late in the race when on lap 50 Michael Schumacher emerged from the pits just behind him. Their battle continued to the end with Schumacher unable to overtake Alonso who took the win. Unfortunatly British TV views didn't get to see the final moments as ITV switched to a commercail break three laps from the finish returning to the action as Alonso crossed the line 0.21 seconds ahead of Schumacher! The post race checks found that Button's car was under the 600 kg minimum weight requirement when drained of fuel. The race stewards cleared him but the FIA appealed sending the issue to court. They were then found guilty, but having the team disqualified from the championship for the year was not implemented, instead they were given a two-race ban. Button's teammate Sato who had finished 5th was disqualified even though his car found not to be underweight! Wurz was thus promoted to third, followed by Villeneuve, Trulli, Heidfeld, Mark Webber and Liuzzi. ITV received 126 compaints and, as a result, repeated the last three laps after the race causing the server on their to website crash. An on-air apology was made by presenter Jim Rosenthal before the start of the next race in Spain two weeks later.
