Chris Barns was involved in Motorsport for most of his life and won a number of titles Rallying in New Zealand. He died in 2004 in a helicopter crash.

Chris Barns was involved in Motorsport for most of his life and won a number of titles in Rallying including the Top Half series (North Island title.) He gave up his car so that his daughter could experience the enjoyment that he once had. He had also been involved in jet sprinting and had done so for 5 years, during this time he had achieved a number of titles whist racing:

• NZ Champion x2
• North Island Champion x2
• South Island Champion
• Numerous individual titles
• Second in the World Championship x2 (run over a few competitions in New Zealand, Australia and America).

He died in 2004 in a helicopter crash.

Barns and passenger Kim Austin went missing following a flight from Taupo to Te Puke. Following an extensive search for the missing helicopter in the Central North Island, the wreckage was located north of Taupo.
