17/12/1965 - 17/6/1991
Record updated 17-Dec-18
Colson was taking part in a Formula Renault test session at Oulton Park in a Reynard FR90 in the afternoon of Wednesday, 19 June 1991 when his car went straight on at the very fast Knickerbrook turn - approximately in the same place where Paul Warwick would lose his life a month later during a Formula 3000 race. Although paramedics were on the scene within seconds, it appears that Colson was killed instantly. In consequence of both tragedies and of other serious accidents at Knickerbrook a chicane was built at the entrance of this turn later that year.
Colson, a twenty-six year old who had graduated in engineering at the Aston University in Birmingham, England, was a very talented driver that struggled the lack of financial support necessary to make his career fly higher. Nevertheless, he was a former British karting champion, and had won the 1989 Minister Engines Pre-1985 FF1600 championship at his first attempt. Colson, who worked as a driving coach at the Chiswick Indoor Karting Centre, had also won a race in the prestigious Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch. He was cremated in Guildford, Surrey, United Kingdom, the week following his death.
