Ronnie Horton

A star MG driver in British races in the 1930s, and also on the Continent, as winner of the 800cc class in the important Avusrennen in 1933.

Ronald Tombs Horton started out as a teenager, driving a 3-wheeled Morgan in sand-racing at Southport and winning several events from 1925. He also competed in speed trials and occasional Brooklands races before successful attacks on the 1100cc class of the major British hillclimbs, with an Amilcar in 1929 and then a succession of specials powered by JAP and Alta engines, and later with an MG K3 Magnette.

He had come to wider notice in 1930 with a class win in the Tourist Trophy at the wheel of a Riley before switching to the works MG team and contesting the major British races in C-Type Midgets, and taking a single-seater version to victory in the prestigious BRDC 500 Miles Race at Brooklands in 1932. But the following year, when he drove a K3, he failed to finish.

Horton’s last appearance seems to have been at Donington in 1934, when he drove the ex-Hamilton K3 single-seater into seventh place.
