Wilbur Pickett

Dr Wilbur Pickett was the track physician at the Daytona International Speedway. He also raced in Trans Am and IMSA. He was killed in a plane crash on the 6th October 1974 in Deland, Florida.

Dr Wilbur Pickett was born in Chevy Chase Maryland. He was a Daytona Beach Neurologist who became the Chief Doctor at the Halifax Hospitial in Daytona Beach and served as the track physician at the Daytona International Speedway.

He raced an Alfa Romeo SZ Zagato in 1967 unfortunately the car was destroyed at the Virginia International Raceway when he spun off and hit a communications pole. In 1968 and 1969 Pickett campaigned a G Production Alfa and won regular invitations to the SCCA runoffs. In 1970 he campaigned an Alfa GTA in the Trans Am series.

In 1972 he raced Bobby Rinzler's Holiday Inn Corvette driving with Charlie Kemp. In April they won the Starlight Three Hour Grand Touring Road Race at the Daytona International Speedway, 2 laps ahead of Michael Keyser/Bob Beasley in their Porsche 911 and Danny Moore/Jerry Crew in their Ford Mustang. This was followed by a number of DNFs however in August he won the Inver House 'Bama 200 at the Alabama International Speedway, Talladega driving on his own. He aslo travelled to Mexico to compete in the 5 Hours of Monterrey, ginishing 4th with Phil Currin.

Staying in IMSA GTO in 1973, driving the Leldon Blackwell Corvette with Bill Bean at the Daytona 3 hour race, he swapped the lead with the Corvette of Dave Heinz and Gene Felton's Camaro for the first hour before dropping back and finishing 4th. He followed this with a 5th at the Daytona 250 mile race driving solo. He also came fifth at the 6 hour race at Mid-Ohio with Bill Bean.

In 1974 he raced with Warren Agor in his Chevrolet Camaro finishing 8th at Road Atlanta in the 6 hour race. He did three more races in the Camaro but was tragically killed in a small plane crash on the 6th October that year in Deland, Florida.
