Ernie McCoy

19/2/1921 - 4/2/2001
Record updated
Car Owner and Driver, raced twice at Indy.
1953 was one of the hottest 500s ever, air temperature of about 100 degrees. Many of the drivers had to have relief during the race but Ernie, Bill Vukovich and Art Cross completed the full race without help. This was where Carl Scarborough got out of his car and was overcome by heat exhaustion, collapsed and later died at the infield hospital. Ernie finished 8th in a Stevens-Offenhauser.
He returned the next year with a Kurtis Kraft and finished 10th
