Born in Jefferson, Ohio, John H. Shackleford, Jr. was a veteran of 12 seasons of racing.
In 1948 he drove relief for Joie Chitwood in the Indy 500.
He was killed later that year at the Dayton Speedway when lost control of his Iddings Offenhauser car on the 3rd lap, took out 30 feet of safety fence before plunging 40 feet off the banking.
